We Don’t Want To Waste Money Right? The Ultimate Guide to Being the Best Shopper

Kendrah Martinez

This is a guide for young teenagers who were never taught how to shop or for older teens who feel like it's time to change up their style. I'll go over what to look for in potential outfits and the things to think about BEFORE going to a store and looking around for new items to wear.

Shopping isn't always going to just be a 'pick whatever you want' activity. I can't tell you the number of times I've wasted money because of outfits I put together in my head being nothing like what I'd end up buying or outfits not looking great on me at all after I thought they were going to look amazing.

Let's go over how things to keep in mind when we think about and shop for each type of part of an outfit:

Tops

Have a strong idea of what you don't want in a top. Use your clothes for reference. Afterward, move on to thinking about things you've been eyeing, what about them catches your attention? You can find more top inspiration on YouTube and Pinterest. Being exposed to different types of clothing teaches you what your preferences are without (or before) going to a clothing store. You might prefer a certain type of sleeve, material, or shirt length. You're mentally ready to shop!

Pants

Pants might be a little more difficult to find your preferences just by looking at them, even if you try them on in the store for a couple of minutes. You're probably going to have to wear a couple of pairs and see how they match with clothes. You already have to make decisions on what new ones you want. So first decide on styles and colors you have too many of; that'll give you an idea of what you're not looking to buy urgently. For the pants you own and currently don't like, see if you genuinely don't like the pants or if you just don't have anything to wear them with that makes them look good. You're mentally ready to shop!

Shoes

It's easier for a model, color, and brand of a shoe to come to mind. I bet you've already thought of ones you've been eyeing. Since shoes tend to be the most expensive ones out of this list, especially for their size, you might only buy 1-2 per shop trip, so make sure they match well. Some tips for when you try them on in-store are 1) If you have to convince yourself that they fit, find a different size or don't buy them 2) When you test out how they feel walking in them, pretend that you're actually on the street walking 3) If the shoes are hard to put on, truly reconsider taking them home. Now you're ready to buy!

Learn About Basic Pieces

In this article, I went one by one, but you should always think of your clothes as things that have to match with each other. Not every outfit will be a standouter, like a bright red Nike Tech. We all have those times when all we need to complete a look is a white beanie or black shoes. Make sure to have basics in every section of your wardrobe.

I hope that now you know about the key things to think about when thinking about making a change in a specific part of your wardrobe. Now what store will you visit?
